Yashar Ali: A Message to Women From a Man: You Are... →
Because women bare the brunt of our neurosis. It is much easier for us to place our emotional burdens on the shoulders of our wives, our female friends, our girlfriends, our female employees, our female colleagues, than for us to impose them on the shoulders of men. It’s a whole lot easier to emotionally manipulate someone who has been conditioned by our society to accept it. We...

Want Real Change? Occupy the Republican Party #ORP →
What if the left registered its discontent with Obama and its disgust for the GOP frontrunners by registering Republican? It would only matter during primary season. And what a message they could send! One long-shot Republican candidate, Gary Johnson, visited Zuccotti Park, affirms that Wall Street banks got unseemly favors, wants to legalize marijuana, opposed the Iraq War, favors bringing the...

» mnmlist: minimalist protest →
The Occupy Wall Street protesters are rapidly becoming the Occupy Earth protesters, and for good reason. People are finally pushing back against the incredible influence that corporations have on every aspect of our lives. People are finding a voice for the frustrations of being powerless against the corporations. And that’s a good thing. Corporations have taken control of our economy, our...

Northwestern offers different benefits to same-sex... →
Soon after Northwestern University professor Robert Fourer entered into a civil union, he did what many others in newly recognized relationships have done: He applied to add his partner to his health insurance. But Northwestern denied his request because his partner is a woman. [more] Seriously, why do so many insist on making this issue so unnecessarily difficult?

digitaloccupation: You say you want a revolution? Well, you know… Factual background On September 17th, a bunch of no good hippy peaceniks and pothead bums began a protest on Wall Street and set up camp at Zuccotti Park, a privately owned park in the middle of the financial district in downtown…

"Last-place Aversion": Evidence and Redistributive... →
Why do low-income individuals often oppose redistribution? We hypothesize that an aversion to being in “last place” undercuts support for redistribution, with low-income individuals punishing those slightly below themselves to keep someone “beneath” them. In laboratory experiments, we find support for “last-place aversion” in the contexts of risk aversion and redistributive preferences....

This program is under threat, though, by the Foxx amendment, which prevents any of the bill’s funds from being used for the USDA “Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food” initiative. Call or write you government representatives to protest. Support our local farms, farmers, food and families.

Four Happy Places: Denmark
Cloaked in almost total darkness during the winter months, Denmark nonetheless rates second in the World Database for Happiness. Known for its egalitarian principles and strong social safety net, Denmark has a very high tax rate. Danes aren’t particularly bothered by this, Buettner discovered, because they are satisfied with the way their taxes are spent, and they don’t have the same attachment...

robertreich: How did we get into this mess? I thought I’d seen Washington at its worst. I was there just after Watergate. I was there when Jimmy Carter imploded. I was there during the government shut-down of 1995. But I hadn’t seen the worst. This is the worst. How can it be that with over 9 percent… This is how I feel about the President I voted for. Worth a read as usual.

You caught me with a silly expression on my face? Happens all the time because I’m usually internally talking to myself, going back and forth over some decision or turning a challenge round and round in my brain debating the solution. It’s like a Sméagol/Gollum sort of thing minus the evil.  And, sometimes, I’ll even make myself laugh out loud. How silly is that?

Tennessee Makes Posting ‘Emotionally Distressing’... →
Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam signed a new law last week that makes it a crime to post images to the Internet that “frighten, intimidate, or cause emotional distress.” Violators found guilty of doing so now face up to one year in jail and $2,500 in fines. Is there some sort of must-be-crazy requirement to hold office in this nation?

Is it just me or is it entirely to difficult to engage in philosophical or political debate on Facebook? I mean that question in relation to online communication rather than in-person discussion. Evolution, as [David] Wilson explains, is not just about dinosaurs and human origins but about why all species behave as they do…And basic evolutionary principles are also the foundation for humanity’s capacity for symbolic thought, culture, and morality. In example after example, Wilson sheds new light on Darwin’s grand theory and how it can be applied to daily life. ...

Indiana to no longer teach cursive writing in... →
Starting this fall, the Indiana Department of Education will no longer require Indiana’s public schools to teach cursive writing. State officials sent school leaders a memo April 25 telling them that instead of cursive writing, students will be expected to become proficient in keyboard use. The memo says schools may continue to teach cursive as a local standard, or they may decide to stop...

A three-judge panel of the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Wednesday that the U.S. military can no longer enforce the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. I am not naïve; bad announcing will always exist in roller derby.  It exists in professional sports where announcers make thousands of dollars per year and thus it will naturally occur in an amateur sport as well.  However, there are dozens of talented announcers out there who can help to spread the game to new fans and they should be used whenever possible.  Competitive teams don’t start...
